Wells Fargo Attune® Card
Wells Fargo Attune® Card

The Wells Fargo Attune® Card has perhaps the most unique set of bonus categories of any credit card. You won’t get bonus cash back on your groceries, but you’ll get market-leading rewards on your kid’s Irish dance lessons and when they get new strings on their viola.

Specifically, you’ll get 4% cash back rewards in a variety of self-care, sports, recreation, entertainment, and socially-conscious purchases. The list of bonus categories is long—see below in the article for the full list.

Like other Wells Fargo cards, the Attune is pretty light on benefits—you’ll get a decent cellular phone protection benefit with the card and secondary rental car insurance, but that’s it.

If you spend a lot in one or more of the card’s many bonus categories, the Attune is likely to be very rewarding for you. If not, you’re going to be better off with a 2% cash back card or a card that earns more rewards in more common bonus categories.

The cash back rewards you earn with the Attune become especially interesting if you have a card like the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card or Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card that offers transferable points. You can combine your rewards across these cards, meaning that your cash back can be transferred to airline transfer partners if you move your rewards to one of these other cards.

Benefits: Limited, but decent cell phone protection

The Wells Fargo Attune card offers a very limited set of benefits, but with decent cellular phone protection, provided you carry a mid-range cell phone. Here are the details.

Consumer Benefits

  • Cellular Telephone Protection gives you coverage to repair or replace your phone if it is stolen or damaged and you use your card to pay your monthly cell phone bill. The coverage on the Attune card has a $25 deductible and limits of $600 per claim and $1,200 or 2 claims per 12 month period.

Travel Benefits

  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver covers damage to or theft of your rental car when you decline the rental company’s loss/damage waiver insurance and rent your car with your card. Coverage is secondary to your other insurance.

Is the Wells Fargo Attune card right for you?

Ultimately, whether you spend heavily in the Wells Fargo Attune’s bonus categories will determine if the card is a good match for you.

If the answer is yes, then the Attune probably deserves a space in your wallet—alongside other cards. The card’s 1% rewards on general purchases aren’t terribly compelling, so let’s look at some cards that you might want to hold in addition to the Attune.

Complements: Cards that pair well with the Wells Fargo Attune

Most likely, you won’t want the Attune to be the only card in your wallet. Here are some thoughts on the cards you might want to have in addition to the Attune.

  • For non-bonused purchases, the Attune only earns 1% cash back rewards, meaning you’ll probably want to carry a 2% cash back card. The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is your option if you want to stick with Wells Fargo, but there are plenty of other options out there. We particularly like the TD Double Up℠ Credit Card and Citi Double Cash® Card.
  • If you want to transfer your rewards to airline and hotel partners for a chance at high-value travel redemptions, it is possible to do this with the rewards you earn on the Attune, but you’ll need to carry a Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card or Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card as well. Since Wells Fargo allows you to combine rewards across cards, you can transfer your Attune rewards to one of the other cards, turning them into points that can then be transferred to that other cards’ travel transfer partners.
  • Extended warranty and purchase protection can provide a lot of value—getting your laptop replaced when it fails three days after its manufacturer’s warranty expires can literally save you thousands of dollars—and we’d recommend getting a card with a good extended warranty benefit for purchases of electronics and durable goods.

Bottom line: Great rewards if you spend in the card’s niche categories

There’s no doubt that the Wells Fargo Attune® Card offers market-leading cash back rewards in its bonus categories. But the categories won’t be a good fit for everyone. Check out the long list of bonus categories, and if they match up with the types of places where you spend a lot, consider adding the Attune to your wallet.
