Our take on the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card
- Great for small business owners who want cash back.
- Better than alternative cards if your small business spends more than $39k on the card.
- Offers good travel insurance protections.
The Ink Business Premier® Credit Card offers a solid value proposition for small business owners who want a flat rate of cash back everywhere or who frequently make very large purchases on their cards.
When it comes to rewards value, most small business owners will come out ahead with the Ink Premier, even when you consider the card’s annual fee. Running the numbers against a card offering 1.5% cash back rewards with no annual fee, you’ll come out ahead after putting $39,000 in purchases on the card annually, or just $19,500 if your purchases are all over $5,000 each. Those are numbers that we think most small business owners will hit easily.
The card comes with the same premium travel protections as the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, making it a reasonable choice to use for occasional business travel, though we think that frequent business travelers should pick up the Preferred card instead of (or in addition to) the Ink Premier for its 3x rewards on travel purchases.
Chase has occasionally flirted with making the Ink Premier into an Ultimate Rewards® card, which would make its rewards transferable to other cards and unlock additional value for redeeming points through Chase travel. But for the moment, the card stands on its own as a cash back rewards card.
Pros
- Market-leading 2% cash back rewards for small business.
- Excellent 2.5% cash back rewards on purchases of $5k or more.
- Premium travel insurance protections.
Cons
- Rewards are earned as cash back, not Ultimate Rewards®.
- $195 annual fee.
Who is Ink Business Premier® Credit Card best for?
The Ink Business Premier® Credit Card is best for the small business owner who wants simple cash back rewards on all purchases.
- Small business owners who want simplicity. The card’s flat-rate 2% cash back rewards are about as simple as you can get, and the card pays off once you spend north of about $39k on the card in a year.
- Business owners who make large purchases. Earning 2.5% cash back rewards on large purchases (over $5,000) can be a great perk if your small business frequently makes large payments with a credit card to vendors and partners.
- Occasional small business travelers. The Ink Premier offers the same travel insurance protections as the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. If you travel infrequently, you’ll get most of the benefits of a travel card without the complexity of carrying another card.
Cards that complement Ink Business Premier® Credit Card
If you have the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card, you’ve got a great card to use for most of your small business spending. But if you want to eke out more rewards in specific business categories, here are a few cards to consider.
- If your business purchases a lot of office supplies, the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is perhaps the best card to use in this category because it earns 5% cash back on the first $25,000 you spend in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable, and phone services.
- The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card earns 3x points on the first $150k you spend on shipping; advertising with social media sites and search engines; internet, cable and phone services; and travel each account anniversary year. If you spend a lot on travel, advertising, or telecommunications, you can eke out some marginal rewards by picking up this card.
Alternatives to the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card
If you’re looking for a card that earns a good rate of cash back on all of your business purchases, here are a few other cards to consider:
- If you prefer a small business card with no annual fee, the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card offers 1.5% cash back rewards (earned as Ultimate Rewards® points) with no annual fee. The Capital One Spark Cash Select also offers 1.5% cash back rewards.
- The Capital One Spark Cash Plus offers 2% cash back rewards for a $150 annual fee, which you’ll get refunded each year when you spend at least $150,000 on the card. This might make more sense if you spend a lot, but never make large purchases.
Rewards: 2% cash back on every purchase plus 2.5% cash back on large purchases
The Ink Business Premier® Credit Card can be a great option for small businesses that want generous cash back on every purchase, and can be especially rewarding for business owners who make frequent purchases of $5,000 or more. Here’s what the Ink Premier earns on spending:
- 5% on Lyft rides through March 2025.
- 2.5% on every purchase of $5,000 or more.
- 2% on all other purchases.
Unlike the other Chase Ink-branded cards, the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card earns cash back rewards which cannot be transferred to your other Chase cards. For more on the rewards of the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card, expand any of the sections below:
How to get the most out of your rewards
In most cases, you’ll be redeeming your Ink Business Premier® Credit Card rewards for cash back, but there are a few ways to get more value from your cash back rewards. Here are the only redemption options you should usually consider:
- Cash back. The Ink Business Premier credit card earn cash back rewards. This will probably be your most common rewards redemption.
- Gift cards on sale. Gift cards on sale can be a good use of your rewards. Chase frequently puts popular brands on sale for 10% off.
- Pay Yourself Back®. Pay Yourself Back® periodically offers promotions that give you greater redemption value. Redeeming your points through a Pay Yourself Back promotion can give you more value than you’ll get through cash back redemptions.
Earning more rewards
The Ink Business Premier® Credit Card offers you a few additional ways to earn extra cash back rewards using your card:
- Chase Offers is a card-linked merchant offers program. When you add a Chase Offer to your card and make a qualifying purchase, you can earn additional cash back on your purchase.
- Shop through Chase is Chase’s online shopping portal. You can earn additional cash back when you click through to partner merchants from the Chase portal and make a purchase.
- Chase Refer-A-Friend allows you to earn cash back when someone you refer applies through your link and is approved for a Chase credit card. Ink Business Premier® Credit Card cardholders can refer small business owners to other Chase Ink-branded cards.
