February 4, 2025: Today, we’re relaunching our Hilton credit card complete guide. We’ve overhauled our recommendations and comparison tables to make them easier to use.
Hilton offers four co-branded credit cards in partnership with American Express. Every one of these cards offers some level of Hilton Honors status, which gets you Hilton’s fifth-night free benefit. And most cards offer paths to free hotel night certificates that can be used at almost any Hilton property, worldwide. You can even get top-tier Diamond status just by holding one of Hilton’s credit cards.
But which credit card is right for you? In this article, we’ll help you decide.
In this article…

You don’t stay at Hilton hotels often: Hilton Honors American Express Card

If you don’t stay at Hilton hotels often, your best bet is probably the Hilton Honors American Express Card. Here’s why:
- Having this card and using it at least once every two years can keep your points from expiring.
- You’ll earn 7x points on your Hilton stays with the card.
- The elite status you get with the card will give you the fifth night free benefit on award stays.
Hilton Honors points expire after 24 months of inactivity. Maybe you have a cache of Hilton points from previous work trips or earning a few Hilton credit card welcome bonuses and you don’t have any plans to earn or use points in the near future. If this is the case, it makes sense to have the Hilton Honors American Express Card. Using your card at least once every 24 months will ensure your points don’t expire.
The card gives you Hilton silver status, which admittedly doesn’t get you much. But will get you a 20% bonus on the points you earn on your stays, elite rollover nights, and a free bottled water. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll get access to the fifth night free benefit on award stays, which can make your point redemptions 25% more valuable.

You stay at Hilton hotels regularly: Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

Most people who stay at Hilton hotels regularly will want to get the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card. Here’s why:
- You’re likely to offset the cost of the card’s annual fee with the card’s statement credits for Hilton stays. (You can earn up to $50 in statement credits each quarter when you use the card for purchases at Hilton properties.)
- You’ll earn 12x points on your Hilton stays you charge to the card.
- The card gets your instant Gold status, which comes with an 80% boost in the points you’ll earn from hotel stays, plus a few additional substantive perks.
- You can earn a free night award after spending at least $15,000 on the card in a calendar year and the card earns enough points in its bonus categories to make it a good choice to use for purchases in the bonus categories.
If you’re wondering whether the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card is the right card for you, ask yourself one question: Will you earn the statement credits for Hilton stays every year without thinking about it? If you’re booking directly with Hilton, paying with your Hilton credit card, and your natural travel patterns have you staying at Hilton hotels at least once a quarter, the card is probably worth it.
On the other hand, if you think you’ll have to manage your travel and book Hilton hotels just to ensure that the card’s statement credits don’t go to breakage, then the Surpass card probably isn’t the best choice for you.
Lastly, one final point on earning Hilton points. While the Surpass card offers fewer points on Hilton stays than the Aspire card (12x vs. 14x), paying a large annual fee to access those earnings doesn’t make sense unless you’re spending a lot of money on Hilton stays each year. We’re still collecting data for a future article on how much Hilton points are worth, but based on our preliminary estimates, you would need to spend $70,000 – $100,000 on Hilton hotel stays with your card to get value in excess of the Aspire card’s annual fee.

Your travel skews luxury: Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

If you regularly stay in high-end luxury Hilton properties on paid stays or you like maximizing the value of Hilton free night certificates, the Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is your card. Here’s why:
- Resort credits and Waldorf Astoria and Conrad on-property credits can provide value if you stay at these properties.
- You get one free night certificate annually from having the card and can earn up to two more through spending.
The Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card offers a few perks that can really pay out if you normally pay for luxury hotel stays within the Hilton brands. The card offers up to $200 in resort credits semi-annually and a $100 on-property credit at participating Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts. If that matches up with the type of travel you normally book, the card has a clear value proposition.
Maybe you don’t pay for luxury travel stays with cash, but you enjoy squeezing as much value as possible out of Hilton free night certificates. In this case, the Aspire card is your card. With the card, you’ll get one Hilton free night certificate each year, plus you’ll have the opportunity to earn up to two additional certificates from spending. Hilton free night certificates can be used at most Hilton properties worldwide and using a few certificates for ultra-luxury hotels (think Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi) can provide incredible value.
You want top-tier Hilton status: Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Getting the Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is one of the ways to get top-tier Hilton Diamond status. In some cases, this can make sense.
Maybe you’re about to start a new job as a consultant, supply chain engineer, or sales executive and you’re going to go from never traveling to traveling 80%+. If your future travel involves staying in Hilton hotels, it might be worthwhile to get the Hilton Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card to propel yourself to top-tier status with the chain instead of slogging out 30 stays or 60 nights with no or middling status with the chain.

Additional benefits of the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card offers a few additional benefits for stays at certain high-end and resort properties.
- Up to $200 in statement credit semi-annually, totally up to $400 back per year for eligible purchases made directly with participating Hilton Resorts using your Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.
- Receive up to a $100 credit fro qualifying charges at participating Waldorf Astoria® Hotels & Resorts and Conrad® Hotels & Resorts properties when you book a two night minimum stay with your card at hiltonhonrosaspirecard.com.
Hilton elite status: Perks like breakfast, upgrades, and executive lounge access
Every Hilton credit card comes with some form of elite status benefit. Just for having the Hilton Honors American Express Card, you get Silver status and you’ll get Gold with the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card or the The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card. On each card you can earn a higher level of status through spending. If you want to go directly to top-tier status, getting the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card will grant you Diamond status straight away.
The perks you’ll get with Hilton elite status are many, but here are the most substantive benefits you’ll receive at each level.

Hilton free night certificates: The most valuable hotel free night award
You can earn a Hilton free night award by spending $15,000 on the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card, and you can get up to 3 free nights with the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.

Hilton free night awards have more potential value than any other hotel chain’s free night certificates. While other hotel chains cap the value you can get from your certificates through restrictions on hotel categories or by issuing certificates that can be used for an award stay “up to” a certain number of points, Hilton certificates can be used at almost any hotel within Hilton’s family of brands, worldwide.
As long as a Hilton hotel offers a standard award room with double occupancy, you should be able to book that room using your certificate. You’ll need to call to book—Hilton Free Night Awards cannot be used online—but you can search for award nights for standard rooms online before using your certificate.
Here are a few things to remember about using Hilton free night awards.
- Hilton free night awards expire. Free night rewards expire 12 months from the date they are issued.
- You must book and stay by the expiration date. The stay you book with your Hilton Free Night Award must be completed by the certificate’s expiration date.
- Hilton free night awards can only be used for standard rooms. If a standard room isn’t available, your certificate can not be used for that stay.
- Hilton free night awards are not transferable. The person named on the certificate must be the one who stays.
- About 60 properties are excluded. The vast majority of these properties are Hilton Club and Hilton Grand Vacations Club locations. Hilton has over 7,500 properties within its brand portfolio.
Rewards: Earn Hilton Honors bonus points for spending on your cards
Hilton credit cards earn Hilton Honors bonus points for spending. While the cards earn an impressive number of absolute points, consider that Hilton bonus points will get you less value per point than many other rewards currencies. Here’s what the Hilton credit cards earn:

How to get better rewards on your spending
For Hilton hotel purchases, the rewards you earn with your Hilton credit cards is tough to beat. But hotel and airline credit cards typically offer lackluster rewards for most non-hotel purchases. Here are some alternatives to consider for rewards on your spending.
- U.S. gas stations. Several cards offer 3% cash back or greater rewards on gas with no annual fee. That’s more than you’re likely to get from your Hilton cards. Check out our list of the best cards to use for gas for better alternatives.
- U.S. supermarkets. You can get more Hilton points on your grocery purchases by using your American Express® Gold Card and transferring Membership Rewards® points to Hilton. Or you could get more rewards as cash back from other cards. Look at our list of the best grocery rewards cards for some ideas.
- General purchases. The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express will grant you 2x Membership Rewards® points on the first $50,000 you spend on the card each year. If you transfer your points to Hilton, you’ll end up with 4x Hilton points per dollar you spend on general purchases. Also consider using a 2% cash back card.
