Do Chase Ultimate Rewards® points expire?

Do Chase Ultimate Rewards® points expire? The short answer is no. As long as your account is open and in good standing, your Chase Ultimate® Rewards points are safe.

But if you plan on closing your Chase credit card account, read on to make sure that you can keep your points.

How you can lose your Ultimate Rewards® points

As long as your account is open and in good standing, your Ultimate Rewards® points are safe. In most cases, you’ll only lose points if your account is closed.

  • If you close your credit card account, you will have 30 days to redeem any unredeemed Ultimate Rewards® points.
  • If your account is closed by Chase for a reason like program misuse, fraudulent activities, failure to pay, or bankruptcy, you will lose your points immediately. However if Chase closes your account for a reason like inactivity, you will have 30 days to redeem your points.

Keeping your Ultimate Rewards points alive

If you plan on closing one of your Chase credit cards and have unredeemed Ultimate Rewards® points, here are some ways you can keep your points alive:

  • Transfer your points to another Ultimate Rewards® credit card. You can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to another card that earns Ultimate Rewards points. Keep in mind that several cards like the Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card are marketed as cash back cards, but earn Ultimate Rewards points behind the scenes. You can transfer your points to these cards.
  • Downgrade your card to a no-annual-fee card. Chase may allow you to downgrade your credit card to an Ultimate Rewards® credit card that carries no annual fee. If you downgrade your card, you will be able to keep your points.
  • Transfer your points to one of Chase’s transfer partners. If you hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred®, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, you can transfer your points to one of Chase’s travel transfer partners. Once your points are transferred, they will be subject to the transfer partner’s ruless.

Of course, if you plan on exiting the Chase Ultimate Rewards® ecosystem entirely, you can always cash out your points for cash.

Bottom line

As long as your Ultimate Rewards-earning credit card is open and in good standing, you will keep your points alive. If you plan on closing your Chase credit card account, be sure to transfer your points to another card or redeem them within 30 days of account closure.
