Editor’s pick: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

We’ll start our recommendation by acknowledging that, if we’re picking a card with an annual fee over a card with no annual fee, we need to make an affirmative case for it.

Both the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express and Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offer a similar $7 monthly statement credit for Disney+.

So why would we recommend the card with the annual fee? Certainly it’s not the 6% cash back on select streaming services driving our recommendation? No. We think that the overall value picture of the Blue Cash Preferred is greater.

If you’re subscribing to Disney+, it’s likely you’re spending a fair amount of money on groceries as well, and that’s where the Blue Cash Preferred really shines. If you spend $6,000 on groceries at U.S. supermarkets in a year, you’ll be up about $100 in cash back rewards, even after considering the card’s higher annual fee. (The break-even point is about $3,200 in supermarket spending annually.)

But it gets better. The Blue Cash Preferred gets Amex’s excellent extended warranty and return protection benefits in addition to the purchase purchase protection offered on the Everyday card. These benefits make this card an excellent choice to use for purchases of things like clothing and durable goods where an extended warranty might come in handy.

Finally, the Blue Cash Preferred is the card I’m currently using as both my primary grocery card and to pay for my Disney+ subscription. And that’s probably the best endorsement we could give.
