More on Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® sign up bonuses

Here’s a bit more on how to get the best Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card sign up bonus, including how you may be targeted for an even bigger bonus.

Chase may send out targeted larger offers.

Within the last several months, I’ve seen posts on Reddit indicating that Chase is sending out targeted offers with higher welcome bonuses. Doctor of Credit also reported this a while back. If you’re in the market for a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, keep an eye on your mail, since people who received these offers received the via direct mail. We know of no way to trigger being targeted for the higher welcome bonus.

The best way to use your Chase Sapphire Preferred® bonus points

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns Ultimate Rewards® points, which can be used for cash back, travel, and a variety of other redemptions. However, not all redemption options are created equal. The Sapphire Preferred offers you two of the best ways to use your Ultimate Rewards points: Point transfers to partners and booking travel through Chase Travel℠ for 25% more value. Here are the best ways to use your points.

  • Cash back. You can always use Ultimate Rewards® points for cash back redemptions. You’ll get 1 cent per point for cash back redemptions on any Ultimate Rewards credit card.
  • Options available with premium cards. If you hold a premium Ultimate Rewards card, you can a few additional options for using your points. Premium Ultimate Rewards cards include the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. You can also use the points you earn on your no-annual-fee card for these premium redemption options if you first transfer your points to your premium card.
    • Travel through Chase Travel℠. Premium Ultimate Rewards cards offer increased value when you use your points to book travel through Chase Travel. You get 25% more value for bookings through Chase Tavel with the Sapphire Preferred or Ink Preferred. And you’ll get 50% more value for bookings made through the Sapphire Reserve card.
    • Transfers to airline and hotel partners. All of the Premium Ultimate Rewards cards offer point transfers to travel partners. Transfers to partners offer the opportunity to get outsized value for your points through luxury travel redemptions. Our favorite Ultimate Rewards® transfer partners include Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, British Airways Avios, United Mileage Plus, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and World of Hyatt.

My take on the current Chase Sapphire Preferred® bonuses

I appreciate Chase’s creativity with its current Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card bonus offer. Most people will get the most value from the Sapphire Preferred using points for bookings through Chase Travel℠ and adding a $300 Chase Travel credit to the bonus gives new cardmembers a way to experience booking through Chase Travel.

And in terms of value, this offer is arguably on-par with the best Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus offers we’ve seen since the launch of the card. Points maximizers would probably prefer to have more points (in that case, check out our Ultimate Rewards® bonus offers page) but for most people, the $300 Chase Travel credit offers substantial, easy-to-use value.

Bottom line: The current Chase Sapphire Preferred® bonus is the best one we’ve seen in a long while. If you’re in the market for this card, get the card now—we’re unlikely to see a better bonus any time soon.

A few notes on applying for Chase cards

  • 5/24 rule. Chase generally won’t approve you if your credit report is showing 5 or more new credit card accounts opened in the last 24 months. This rule is knows as the 5/24 rule. If you’re unsure if you are “under 5/24” you should check your 5/24 status before applying for a Chase card. Note that recently this rule seems to have softened, especially for Ink cards. See our coverage about Chase 5/24 for more.
  • Only one Sapphire-branded card. You can only hold one Chase Sapphire-branded card at a time. This means you can have either a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or a Chase Sapphire Reserve®, but not both.
  • You can get a welcome bonus on a Chase card, even if you’ve had the card previously. How often you can earn a welcome bonus on a Chase card varies by card family.
    • Most cards allow you to earn a welcome bonus if it has been at least 24 months since your last received a welcome bonus on the same card.
    • Chase Sapphire-branded cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can only earn a welcome bonus once every 48 months. (We published a separate article to help you determine if you can get a Sapphire welcome bonus.)
    • Marriott cards have their own special rules.
  • Chase will match an increased bonus. If you apply for a Chase card and the bank offers a higher bonus within 90 days, you can send Chase a secure message or call them to have your welcome offer matched.
  • In-branch offers are sometimes better. Chase sometimes has better credit card welcome offers in-branch than it will publish on its own website or through affiliate networks. Check all channels to make sure you’re getting the best bonus.
  • Chase business cards do not report to personal credit reports and do not impact your 5/24 status as long as they are current.

Other ways to get Ultimate Rewards® points

Getting a new Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card isn’t the only way to earn Ultimate Rewards® points. Several other personal and small business cards earn Ultimate Rewards, and the Chase Ink-branded cards in particular offer incredibly generous welcome bonuses on cards with no annual fee. And Ultimate Rewards you earn on another card can be transferred to your Sapphire Preferred.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® 85k bonus still available?

As of publication, the in-branch 85k offer is no longer available. This ended sometime in mid-June 2024. As of June 26, 2024, the current Chase Sapphire Preferred® in-branch offer is the same as the online offer, but adds an additional 10,000 points after a total of $6,000 of spending within 6 months.

Can I transfer points to airlines with the Sapphire Preferred?

Yes. If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you can transfer points. Points can be transferred to any one of Chase’s airline or hotel transfer partners.

What is the most valuable use of Ultimate Rewards points?

You can get the most value out of your Ultimate Rewards points by using a premium credit card to redeem for travel at elevated value, or transfer to an airline or hotel partner. Not every transfer partner offers great value, so be sure that you’re redeeming for more value than you could get by booking travel directly.

Can I transfer the Ultimate Rewards points I earn with a Chase Freedom Card to airlines?

If you hold a premium Ultimate Rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or the Ink Business Premier, you can! Just transfer the Ultimate Rewards you earn on the Freedom card to your premium card and then transfer those points to airline or hotel partners.

Do I have to go into a branch to get the extra 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points offer?

Yes. The in-branch offer of 10,000 additional Ultimate Rewards points requires an in-person visit to a Chase branch bank.
