Sapphire Preferred® Card sign-up bonus offer: 60k points or 70k points in-branch

January 13, 2025: Today we checked in on the online and in-branch sign-up bonus offers available on the Sapphire Preferred® Card. The best current bonus still remains at 60,000 points online, but you can still get an additional 10,000 points with an additional $1,000 spending through the available in-branch offer.

Here’s what you need to know about the current Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card new cardmember bonuses.

Additional sign-up bonus in-branch: As of January 13, 2025, Chase is offering an exclusive in-branch offer. You can earn 70,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 in purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. This offer is only available in-branch from a Chase banker.

My take: A decent offer on a good card

The current offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is objectively a good offer. It makes our list of the best large credit card cash back bonuses. While we’d love it if you got the card through our affiliate links on this site, the in-branch offer is (in our view) a better offer, so go delight a Chase banker and apply in-branch for an extra 10,000 points after an extra $1,000 of spending on the card.

Chase has historically increased the bonus once or twice a year since we started tracking. The offer that ended on November 14, 2024 was perhaps the best offer that existed since the card launched. No one but Chase’s marketing department knows if that bonus will return. My guess is that we won’t see any increased bonus until well into 2025.

Relative to the market, the Sapphire Preferred’s welcome bonus is on-par with what you’d get from similar premium travel credit cards with similar annual fees.

If the card fits within your reward strategy, it probably doesn’t make sense to wait. But if you’re just looking for a card that opens up additional value for Chase Travel℠ and point transfers to partners, take a peek at the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. That card has a similar annual fee and a larger welcome bonus.

In-branch exclusive offer: 70k points after $5,000 of spending

On January 13, 2025, we checked in on the in-branch offers on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. We found that the Sapphire Preferred in-branch exclusive offer features 10,000 more points than the online offer, albeit with the requirement to spend $1,000 more on the card:

Exclusive branch only offer — Earn 70,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. You can redeem your points through Chase Ultimate Rewards® for cash back, gift cards, or travel through Chase Travel℠ for even more value.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred offer earns 70,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offer shows the standard 60k points after $4,000 sign-up bonus.

In-branch welcome offers change from time to time and this information is accurate as of our last check. The in-branch offer may be different or may no longer be available.

Are you eligible to earn the sign-up bonus?

Chase’s terms seem to restrict who can get a new Chase Sapphire Preferred® card, rather than who can earn a bonus. Conceivably, if you can get the card, you can earn a bonus. Here are the rules:

First, you cannot have any other Sapphire-branded credit card. If you currently have a Chase Sapphire Preferred®, you cannot get a second Sapphire Preferred card. And likewise, if you have either the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the no-annual-fee Chase Sapphire® card (not available to new cardmembers) you won’t be able to open a new Sapphire Preferred card.

Second, you cannot have received a bonus for any Sapphire card within the previous 48 months. This includes both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® and Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Keep in mind that the terms and conditions of the bonus offer state that you cannot have received a bonus within the previous 48 months. Personally, I read that as 48 months from the statement date on which your bonus posted.

Here’s the exact text of the bonus terms and conditions:

The product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 48 months.

More on Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® sign up bonuses

Here’s a bit more on how to get the best Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card sign up bonus, including how you may be targeted for an even bigger bonus.

Chase may send out targeted larger offers.

Within the last several months, I’ve seen posts on Reddit indicating that Chase is sending out targeted offers with higher welcome bonuses. Doctor of Credit also reported this a while back. If you’re in the market for a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, keep an eye on your mail, since people who received these offers received the via direct mail. We know of no way to trigger being targeted for the higher welcome bonus.

The best way to use your Chase Sapphire Preferred® bonus points

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns Ultimate Rewards® points, which can be used for cash back, travel, and a variety of other redemptions. However, not all redemption options are created equal. The Sapphire Preferred offers you two of the best ways to use your Ultimate Rewards points: Point transfers to partners and booking travel through Chase Travel℠ for 25% more value. Here are the best ways to use your points.

  • Cash back. You can always use Ultimate Rewards® points for cash back redemptions. You’ll get 1 cent per point for cash back redemptions on any Ultimate Rewards credit card.
  • Options available with premium cards. If you hold a premium Ultimate Rewards card, you can a few additional options for using your points. Premium Ultimate Rewards cards include the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. You can also use the points you earn on your no-annual-fee card for these premium redemption options if you first transfer your points to your premium card.
    • Travel through Chase Travel℠. Premium Ultimate Rewards cards offer increased value when you use your points to book travel through Chase Travel. You get 25% more value for bookings through Chase Tavel with the Sapphire Preferred or Ink Preferred. And you’ll get 50% more value for bookings made through the Sapphire Reserve card.
    • Transfers to airline and hotel partners. All of the Premium Ultimate Rewards cards offer point transfers to travel partners. Transfers to partners offer the opportunity to get outsized value for your points through luxury travel redemptions. Our favorite Ultimate Rewards® transfer partners include Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, British Airways Avios, United Mileage Plus, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and World of Hyatt.

Other ways to get Ultimate Rewards® points

Getting a new Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card isn’t the only way to earn Ultimate Rewards® points. Several other personal and small business cards earn Ultimate Rewards, and the Chase Ink-branded cards in particular offer incredibly generous welcome bonuses on cards with no annual fee. And Ultimate Rewards you earn on another card can be transferred to your Sapphire Preferred.

We continuously updated our list of the best Ultimate Rewards welcome bonuses. Bookmark that list of you want to earn Ultimate Rewards points.

Bottom line: A decent sign-up bonus on a core Ultimate Rewards® card

The current 60,000 point bonus is a decent bonus on one of the cards that is core to building an Ultimate Rewards® wallet. If you’re thinking of applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and live nearby a Chase branch, be sure to check in branch to see if there is a better bonus on offer.
