My take on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
For a $395 annual fee, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is probably the best-value high-end travel credit card you can get. If you travel a few times a year, you can easily make use of the card’s $300 credit for bookings through Capital One Travel and you’ll earn a 10,000 point anniversary bonus when you renew the card. These two perks alone make the annual fee a break-even proposition.
The card offers Priority Pass lounge access with two guests, plus all of your (free) authorized users will get their own Priority Pass memberships, making the card the cheapest way to get Priority Pass, even if the Priority Pass Select membership doesn’t allow restaurant access. And the card earns transferable points, though I don’t personally earn many points from putting spending on this card. I use other cards with greater point-earning for category purchases like groceries, drugstores, gas, Costco and restaurants. But I do use the card to book travel. While its travel protections aren’t as good as the Chase Sapphire Reserve, they’re good enough.
I do wish that the card allowed you to cash out points at 1 cent each without having the jump through the hoop of redeeming for statement credits to offset travel. Overall, I think that this card is a good value for the person who travels at least a handful of times a year.

A few notes on applying for Capital One credit cards
- Capital One is known to pull your credit report from all three credit bureaus, meaning that it might have a greater impact on your credit score when you apply for a card.
- You may be able to get a new customer welcome bonus on Capital One cards more than once, but you must wait four years from receiving the welcome bonus. Cards typically have language like, “Existing or previous cardmembers are not eligible for this product if they have received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past 48 months” in the terms and conditions.
- Capital One limits the number of cards you can have to two personal cards. Non-Capital One branded cards do not count toward this limit.
- If you apply for a card and Capital One isn’t able to approve you for that specific card, they may consider you for an alternate version of the same card. These alternate versions of cards often offer lower (or no) welcome offers, carry higher interest rates or annual fees or offer no rewards. If Capital One offers you an alternate version of a card, be sure to check the details before proceeding with the application.
- You can check to see if you are pre-approved for Capital One cards online with no impact to your credit score.
- You can check your application status by calling Capital One at 1-800-903-9177. Capital One does not have a way to check your application status online.

Benefits of the Venture X
In addition to earning generous rewards on everyday spending, the Venture X card comes with a bunch of benefits that are especially useful to cardmembers who travel. Here are the benefit highlights of this card.
Airport lounge access and travel benefits
Premium travel credit cards frequently offer benefits that enhance your experience while traveling. Terms and restrictions apply to all benefits.
Airport lounge access – Capital One offers airport lounge access to you and two of your guests at its own network of airport lounges (currently only at Dallas-Fort Worth and Washington Dulles, but soon expanding to include Denver.) In addition to Capital One lounges, cardmembers can access PriorityPass and Plaza Premium lounges worldwide. Authorized users on your Venture X account are also granted their own lounge access benefits. As of January 1, 2023, the Priority Pass membership offered on Venture X accounts no longer includes restaurant access.
Premier collection hotels – Get a $100 experience credit, daily breakfast for two, and other benefits when you book a Premier Collection hotel through Capital One Travel.
Hertz President’s Circle – Hertz Gold Plus Rewards President’s Circle® offers perks like guaranteed car upgrades, the widest selection of rental vehicles, and a dedicated customer service texting line. As a Capital One Venture X cardmember, you are eligible for a complimentary status upgrade to President’s Circle. Enrollment is required and takes 24-72 hours to process.
Travel insurance benefits
Cards targeted toward travelers often offer travel insurance benefits that can protect you when you are traveling away from home. Terms and restrictions apply to all benefits.
Auto rental collision damage waiver – Auto rental collision damage waiver insurance protects you against damage or theft to your rental vehicle. For coverage to apply, you need to reserve and pay for your vehicle using your card and decline your car rental company’s collision damage waiver. Capital One provides primary coverage up to $75,000 for rentals worldwide, with the exception of rentals in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Coverage is provided on rentals of 15 days or less in your country of residence or 31 days or less outside your country of residence.
Trip cancellation and interruption insurance – Trip cancellation and interruption insurance can reimburse you for prepaid travel expenses if your trip is canceled or you must cut your trip short for a covered reason. Capital One will cover up to $2,000 of nonrefundable prepaid common carrier tickets (like airfares and train tickets) if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason.
Trip delay reimbursement – Trip delay reimbursement covers expenses like food and hotel expenses if your common carrier (airline, train, bus, cruise ship, etc.) transportation is delayed significantly or overnight. Capital One trip delay reimbursement provides up to $500 of coverage for delays of six hours or more or delays that require an overnight stray.
Lost luggage reimbursement – Lost luggage reimbursement provides coverage to replace items that are lost or damaged while traveling on a common carrier, like an airline. Coverage is typically in excess of any reimbursement you receive from the carrier. Capital One provides lost luggage reimbursement of up to $3,000 per trip, or $2,000 per trip for New York residents.
Purchase insurance benefits: Protect the stuff you buy
Purchase insurance benefits protect the things you buy using your card. They include purchase protection, return protection, and extended warranty. Here’s what you’ll get with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card:
Benefit | Available on the Venture X? | Essential terms |
---|---|---|
Purchase security Protects against damage, theft, and certain types of loss. | 90 days from purchase $10,000 per claim $50,000 per cardholder | |
Return protection If a merchant won’t offer a refund for a refund of a product, return protection can reimburse you. | 90 days from purchase $300 per item $1,000 per account, per year | |
Extended warranty protection Extends the warranty on the items you buy. | Adds 1 year to eligible warranties of 3 years or less $10,000 per claim $50,000 per cardholder |
The Venture X contains the complete trifecta of purchase insurance benefits. That means that the card is both a great choice for purchasing expensive items and can be your go-to-card to use at merchants where the return policy is less than stellar. Even better, because you’ll earn 2x points on your purchases, in most cases you won’t be giving up rewards for this additional protection.
When purchase insurance benefits matter
Purchase insurance benefits matter more as the replacement cost of the non-consumable stuff you buy increases. Electronics like cell phones, computers, and office equipment or household durable goods like furniture, and kitchen appliances are examples of purchases that you might consider using a card that earns less in rewards if it has better purchase insurance benefits.
As a rule of thumb, if you would ever repair or sell a physical, non-consumable item buy, you should probably choose a card with robust purchase insurance over a card that earns more cash back.

Cell phone protection benefits
Cell phone protection – Cell phone protection provides coverage for repair or replacement of your mobile when you charge your monthly cell phone bill to your card account. Capital One cell phone protection provides coverage up to $800 per claim, with a maximum of 2 claims totaling $1,600 per 12 month period.
Statement credits
Some cards offer statement credits for purchases at select merchant partners. Terms and restrictions apply to all benefits.
$300 annual Capital One Travel credit – Receive up to $300 in Capital One Travel discounts annually when you book travel through Capital One Travel. As of September 2023, you’ll receive your Capital One Travel credit as a discount at checkout with Capital One Travel.
$100 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® credit – Get up to $100 for Global Entry or $85 for TSA PreCheck membership when you charge your program application fee to your card. This benefit is limited to one statement credit every 4 years.
Other benefits of note
Additional Cardholders – You can add additional cardholders to your Venture X account for free. Additional cardholders can receive their own airport lounge access and Priority Pass membership.
