Blue Cash Everyday® Card review: 3% cash back in useful categories

March 12, 2025: The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers an easy way to get a decent amount of cash back rewards on your everyday purchases. While it isn’t the best card for anything, it’s a decent option if you want to avoid annual fees.

Cards and Points Rating: 4.0/5.0
Read more about our star ratings.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express (See Rates and Fees) is a decent card for everyday purchases for someone wanting simplicity with no annual fee, and the card pairs well with a 2% cash back credit card.

The killer feature of the Blue Cash Everyday is its cash back on up to $6,000 of purchases per year (then 1%) in each of its bonus categories:

  • Groceries at U.S. supermarkerts.
  • U.S. online retail purchases.
  • Gas at U.S. gas stations.

While the 3% bonus rewards are capped in each category, the $6,000 cap is high enough that it will probably cover most spending by most families in those categories.

If you subscribe to Disney+, ESPN Plus, or Hulu and pay for it directly (i.e. not through a bundle with something like a cell phone plan), you can benefit from the $7 monthly statement credits when you charge an eligible subscription to the card. Terms apply, enrollment required.

The card doesn’t offer much in the way of consumer protections—you might want to consider upgrading to the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express or getting another card with an extended warranty benefit for your more expensive purchases. But the value proposition for most consumers, especially Disney+ subscribers, is solid.

Our experience: We love Disney+ credits

I don’t hold the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, but I do hold the upgraded version, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express.

With either card, you can earn what is marketed as an “$84 Disney Bundle Credit.” In reality, the credit is a monthly $7 credit and I use this to cover part of my family’s monthly Disney+ subscription. But the credit is much more widely useful than the marketing implies. If you dig into the terms and conditions, you’ll find that you can earn the credit if you charge an eligible Hulu or ESPN+ subscription as well. In my view, if you subscribe to any of these services as a standalone subscription, getting this card is an easy call.

I write about credit cards and travel rewards for a living, so I have more cards in my wallet than most people. If I didn’t have a stable of cards for my online shopping (mostly at Amazon, Target, and Costco) and my grocery store purchases, I could see myself holding the Blue Cash Everyday to keep my wallet simple and annual fees low.

Rewards: Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express rewards

With the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, you’ll earn cash back on your purchases. Here’s what the card earns on your spending:

  • 3% on groceries at U.S. supermarkets
on up to $6,000 per year of purchases, then 1%.
  • 3% on U.S. online retail purchases
on up to $6,000 per year of purchases, then 1%.
  • 3% on gas at U.S. gas stations
on up to $6,000 per year of purchases, then 1%.
  • 1% on other purchases.

The $6,000 spending limit for bonus rewards in each category applies to each category individually, and resets with the calendar year. For example, you could spend $6,000 at U.S. Supermarkets, plus $4,000 on online retail purchases, plus $2,000 at U.S. gas stations in 2025 and earn 3% rewards on all of that spending with this card.

Checking your cash back rewards

Because the Blue Cash Everyday® card only earns 3% on the first $6,000 of spending in each of its bonus categories, you might want to occasionally check on how much you’ve spent in each category. This is easiest to do through the American Express website.

After logging into your account on the Amex website, select your Blue Cash Everyday card and scroll down to the panel labeled “Reward Dollars.” Click on “Explore your rewards.” On the screen that follows, you’ll see how much you’ve earned in each of the card’s bonus categories. Keep in mind that you’ll only earn up to $180 of cash back rewards in each category before you earn 1%. (3% earnings are capped at $6,000 of spending in each category.)

Refer a friend. Earn rewards.

Amex Refer a Friend can earn you additional points or cash back on your card.

American Express offers some cardmembers the ability to earn additional rewards on some cards by referring friends to American Express cards. If you are eligible to refer a friend, you’ll likely see a “Refer a Friend. Earn Rewards” link when you log into your account on the American Express website. You can also find this under the “Membership” tab in the mobile app.

You can also go directly to the Refer a Friend page on americanexpress.com. When on the page, either log into your account online to or enter your card number, 4-digit security code, and last 4 digits of your social security number to check your referral eligibility and get your referral link. If you are eligible, you can send a link to your friend via email or you can copy and paste the link on the screen to post on social media or send directly.

If your friend is approved for a new American Express card using the link you sent, you may receive additional points or cash back. The amount of rewards you can earn is limited each year. Additionally, the offer you send to your friend may not be the best available offer.

Not all cards or cardmembers are eligible to refer a friend. And eligibility may change over time—I’ve personally see eligibility come and go on several of my own cards.

Using your rewards

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express’s cash back rewards can either be redeemed for a statement credit or used at checkout. Most likely, you’ll want to redeem your rewards for a statement credit.

Rewards redemption panel in the Amex app on the Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred Cards. The image shows $10.06 in rewards and a link to redeem rewards.
Redeem your cash back rewards in the Amex app.

Within the mobile app, select your account and click on the “Membership” tab. At the top of the screen, you’ll see a section labeled “Reward Dollars” and the option to redeem your rewards. Click “Redeem Rewards.” You’ll then be prompted to either redeem your entire reward dollars amount for a statement credit or redeem another amount.

While you can redeem your rewards at checkout at Amazon.com, we don’t advise using this option. You’ll give up the opportunity to earn points on your purchase and redeeming a statement credit is simpler.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a great option if you want to increase the rewards you earn and minimize credit card annual fees. Here’s how you can know that the card is right for you:
