The best credit cards for gas: Earn more the most rewards on fuel with these cards

September 17, 2024: Fueling your car may not be your greatest expense, but it might be one of your most consistent. Getting a card with great rewards on gas can have a meaningful impact on your personal bottom line.

Fortunately, many of the best credit cards for gas purchases also offer great rewards elsewhere, meaning you might be able to boost the total rewards you earn across a larger swath of spending. And if you’re looking to earn points in a specific bank program, we have those cards on our list, too.

Here are the best credit cards to use for gas.

How we picked: Considering the best rewards on gas plus the bigger picture

One might think that picking the best gas credit card may simply be a matter of finding the greatest cash back on gas purchases. Done. But we went deeper than that with our analysis.

You might spend a ton on gas—maybe you’re fueling a work truck and driving 300+ miles a day. Getting a credit card for gas might mean several hundred dollars of rewards, or more, each year. And you definitely don’t want rewards caps. Or you might drive a hybrid and work from home. Maybe gas isn’t a huge line item in your budget, but you’d like some additional rewards and want a card that earns rewards on gas in addition to being a useful card elsewhere.

When we selected the best cards for gas purchases, we took a variety of use cases into account. Here were our largest considerations:

  • Gas rewards earning rate. In any list of the best cards to use for gas purchases, the rate of rewards you earn is going to be the top-line number.
  • Ability to use rewards for cash back. Not all points are created equal. We prioritize cash back rewards, but we also include picks for points collectors who want to earn points in a specific program.
  • Earning caps on gas. Many cards cap the amount of increased rewards you can earn on gas. We only included cards with earning caps we considered reasonable for most people. We also included cards with no earning caps for those who spend a lot on gas.
  • Annual fees. Paying an annual fee can eat up a lot of the value of the rewards you earn. We only included cards with annual fees where we could see that the rewards you earn and benefits you receive could outweigh the annual fee.
  • How useful the card is elsewhere. You may not want to carry a credit card for just gas purchases—several cards on our list earned their places when we considered the total picture of how you might use a card.

Here’s a bit more detail on the best cards to use for gas purchases. You can learn more about these cards here or in dedicated card guides that we have built for many of these cards (linked below).

5% gas rewards as cash back or ThankYou Points: Citi Custom Cash℠ Card

Citi Custom Cash℠ Card card art
Citi Custom Cash℠ Card

The Citi Custom Cash℠ Card isn’t marketed as a gas card, but if you use it for gas, you can get up to 5% cash back on up to $500 in gas purchases monthly.

You’ll get the most rewards on gas with the Custom Cash if you use it solely (or mostly) for gas purchases. That’s because the card earns 5% cash back on the first $500 you spent in your top eligible spending category each statement cycle.

In our view, the best way to maximize the card’s rewards is to use it for a single 5% eligible category. Keep in mind that you can also get multiple Custom Cash cards.

Best for mobile wallet rewards: U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card

U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card doesn’t have gas as a bonus category, but if your preferred gas station lets you pay with a mobile wallet, you can earn a bunch of rewards on your gas purchases.

Before you let the card’s $400 annual fee scare you off, know that you’ll get $325 of that back as a statement credit automatically when you charge that much in eligible dining or travel expenses to your card.

And the card is usable for more than gas. That’s because the card offers 3x points on every purchase made with Apple Pay®, Google Pay™, and Samsung Pay. Better yet, if you redeem your points for travel, you can get 50% more value, making it effectively a 4.5% rewards card toward travel.

If you redeem your points for travel rewards, the card becomes the best gas credit card to use at Costco, beating out even Costco’s own credit card.

Up to 4x on gas, paired with uncommonly good travel benefits: U.S. Bank Altitude Connect® Visa Signature® Card

U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature card

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card is a good option if you’re not a Costco member or have other plans for your Citi Custom Cash℠ Card. The card becomes a great option if you also travel occasionally and value the card’s travel benefits.

You’ll earn 4x points on up to $1,000 in combined purchases at gas stations and EV charging stations, which is nothing to sneeze at on a card with no annual fee. This comes out to just over $330 in gas spending a month—and we think that most families spend less than this on gas in a typical month.

But where the card really shines is in its travel benefits. You can learn about those over in our guide to the Altitude Connect.

Recent changes to the card capped the rewards on gas to $1,000 in purchases every 3 months, but also lowered the ongoing annual fee from $95 to $0. Read more about the changes to the Altitude Connect.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best credit card for gas?

The best credit card for gas depends on your spending patterns and how you plan to use your rewards. You can easily get 3% cash back on your gas purchases using a card with no annual fee. But you can earn more if you’re a member of a warehouse club, have a banking relationship, or pay an annual fee.

Which card can I use for gas at Costco?

If you’re a Costco member, it probably comes as no surprise that the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is a great choice for its 4% rewards on up to $7,000 of gas purchases, but any Visa card can earn you rewards on gas purchases at Costco. You might consider the U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card as well. It’s a Visa card that will earn you up to 4.5% toward travel when you tap to pay at the pump.

Are prepaid cards for gas a good idea?

Prepaid cards are rarely a good idea. Prepaid cards have much less protection against fraud if your card member gets stolen. And gas pumps can be easy targets for criminals who install devices in card readers that can steal your credit card number. If you use a card at one of these compromised gas pumps, you might find your prepaid card and your gas tank drained. It’s best to stick with credit cards for gas purchases.

Is there a gas card that can be used anywhere?

All of the gas cards on the Cards and Points list of best gas cards are credit cards, which can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted. A limited number of gas stations may not accept certain types of cards. Costco, for example, only accepts Visa cards. With limited exceptions, the gas cards on our list can be used most places.

Is it better to buy gas with a credit card or debit card?

It is better to buy gas with a credit card. Most gas stations use pay-at-the-pump terminals that can be targets for fraudsters who install devices called “skimmers” to rip off your card number. While credit cards have robust consumer protections and limits on the amount of money you’ll owe if someone fraudulently uses your card, debit cards have fewer protections and deduct money directly from your bank account.
