What to consider: How to find the best Target credit card for you
If you’re shopping at Target, there are likely two general types of things that you buy: groceries and household consumables (like bananas, toilet paper, and toothpaste) and durable goods (like small appliances, electronics, and furniture). And your priorities for these two types of purchases are going to be different.
When buying groceries, you should likely prioritize cash back or the discount you get with your card. Consumer insurance benefits like extended warranty are secondary. Milk and eggs don’t come with warranties, so you’re not going to get any benefit out of these card perks
However, when buying durable goods, or things with warranties, getting robust consumer insurance protections like extended warranty and purchase protection should be your priority, even if at the expense of some cash back. If you need to make a warranty claim on a computer, television, or cell phone, the few dollars of cash back you might give up to put that purchase on a card with an extended warranty will be well worth it.
Which card to use for the 10% off Target gift card promotion
Although the Target 10% off Target Gift Card promotion happens twice a year, it’s worth a special callout. The Target Circle Card does not give you an additional discount on Target Gift Cards. That means you should use any other credit card for this promotion.
Remember that Target usually allows you to purchase these gift cards online, so you’re not limited to only the cards you can use in-store—one of the cards that offers 3% at Target.com is your best bet if you want to maximize this promotion any not pay an annual fee.
Editor’s pick: Target Circle™ Mastercard for a 5% discount

The best credit card to use at Target most of the time is the Target Circle™ Mastercard. Most of your purchases at Target are likely to be groceries and household consumables—purchases where cash back (or a discount) is really the only benefit that matters.
Here’s what we like most about the Target Circle™ Mastercard:
- 5% discount on Target purchases. While you can eke out slightly more value from 5% cash back, an immediate 5% discount on Target purchase wins for simplicity and immediate value.
- No annual fee. We don’t like annual fees, and other cards’ annual fees pushed them lower on our list.
- Extra 30 days to return items. Target’s return policy (90 days on most items) is already quite generous, but getting an extra 30 days to return items is a nice perk that you won’t get elsewhere.
While we think that the Target Circle™ Mastercard is the best card to use at Target in general, we think that there are a few cases when you should consider another card.
First, when Target runs its annual 10% off Target gift card sale (usually the first week in December) you’ll want to use another card—the 5% discount on the Circle card doesn’t apply to purchases of Target gift cards.
Second, when you purchase durable goods like home appliances, electronics, and furniture, using a card with an extended warranty is likely to provide more value than the Target Circle card’s 5% discount. If you buy a $1,000 laptop with a cash back card that offers an extended warranty, you’re probably giving up about $35 worth of discount, but that’s a cheap price to pay for an extra year of warranty coverage on an expensive item.
Finally, we wouldn’t use the card outside target. Even though the card gets 2% on dining and gas, there are other cards that can earn you more—and as cash back, rather than as a Target gift card. Target also lists that you can get “exclusives and offers” with the card, but
Target Circle™ Mastercard: An essential card for Target shoppers

If you’re a Target shopper, the Target Circle™ Mastercard should be your first choice for a credit card to use at Target. The card offers an instant 5% discount on most items you will buy. That makes it ideal for groceries, clothing, and household consumables.
Why use it at Target: The Target Circle Mastercard’s instant 5% discount on most things you buy at Target is hard to beat.
Use another card when you buy an expensive item that would benefit from an extended warranty. Also, since the Target Circle Card’s 5% discount does not stack with Target’s annual 10% off gift cards promotion, use another card for this purchase.
You should get the card if Target is your primary grocery store or your go-to for household consumables.
Downsides and drawbacks: The Target Circle card isn’t terribly useful for purchases outside of Target stores. Sure, you can use it, but you’d do much better with a card that earns 2% cash back—you’ll earn better rewards as cash back that you can spend anywhere, rather than as a Target gift card.

U.S. Bank Smartly™ Visa Signature® Card: 4% cash back rewards everywhere

If you have $100,000 that you can move to U.S. Bank, there’s a good argument for the simplicity of using the U.S. Bank Smartly™ Visa Signature® Card everywhere.
Why use it at Target: You value simplicity and like cash back rewards.
Use another card when you buy an expensive item that would benefit from an extended warranty. Giving up a little bit of cash back could pay off big time if you ever need to make a warranty claim.
You should get the card if you value simplicity and have $100,000 of investments with or that you can move to U.S. Bank.
Downsides and drawbacks: The obvious downside to the card is that getting maximum cash back with the Smartly Visa requires you to have $100,000 of investments or deposits with U.S. Bank. The card also offers no additional benefits beyond its cash back, making it a less-than-ideal choice to use for purchases where you’d want an extended warranty or purchase protection.

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card: 3% or more online

Bank of America’s Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card can really pay off if you have $100,000 or more in assets with Bank of America and Merrill. If you do, you can get up to 5.25% cash back at Target.com if you select online shopping as your choice category.
But even as a standalone card, the card is a reasonable choice to use for Target.com purchases when you want an extended warranty. Without a BofA banking relationship, it can still get you 3% rewards for your online shopping, which is pretty decent.
Why use it at Target: You want greater rewards at Target.com, don’t want to pay an annual fee, and value an extended warranty benefit.
Use another card when you’re buying grocery and consumable items in-store.
You should get the card if you either have $100,000 of assets with Bank of America or you are fine with a card that can earn you up to 3% cash back online.
Downsides and drawbacks: There’s little downside to having this card—even without a banking relationship, it will get you 3% cash back in the category you select on up to $2,500 spent each quarter.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers 3% cash back on the first $6,000 you spend on U.S. online retail purchases each year, then 1%. That means you can earn plenty of cash back at Target.com
Since the card doesn’t offer an extended warranty benefit, you’re likely to get value out of this card if you are an occasional Target shopper who shops primarily online.
Why use it at Target: You want greater rewards at Target.com, but want a card that is also usable for other regular purchases.
Use another card when buying items in-store or when you want an extended warranty benefit.
You should get the card if you like the idea of having a card that can earn you bonus rewards on a modest amount of U.S. online retail purchases, U.S. gas station purchases, and U.S. supermarket purchases. And if you subscribe to Disney+ as a standalone service, you can probably get some value out of the card’s Disney+ credit (enrollment required, terms apply.)

Citi Double Cash® Card: 2% cash back with extended warranty

The Citi Double Cash® Card offers a simple value proposition: 1% cash back when you buy and 1% cash back when you pay. And Citi recently added an extended warranty benefit to the card, making it great as an “everywhere else” card and as a go-to option when you want a card with no annual fee and an extended warranty.
Why use it at Target: Use the Double Cash over the Target Circle Card for purchases when you want extended warranty protection.
Use another card when buying items like groceries or consumables for which having an extended warranty simply doesn’t matter.
You should get the card if you don’t already have a card that earns 2% cash back everywhere.
Downsides and drawbacks: There is little downside to getting the Citi Double Cash. Even if you never use it at Target, it’s a great fallback card for everyday purchases.

U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card: Maximum uncapped rewards with mobile wallet

If you hold the U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card you can earn you up to 3% cash back or 4.5% toward travel on your Target purchases whenever you use a mobile wallet with tap-to-pay as your payment. The card also has both extended warranty and purchase protection benefits, so it is a great choice for your non-consumable purchases.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get increased rewards at Target.com. There’s not currently a way to use the tap-to-pay feature of mobile wallets online.
There’s one purchase at Target that you should never use the Altitude Reserve for: Gift cards. U.S. Bank’s terms say that you won’t earn 3x rewards on mobile wallet purchases if you buy gift cards and the bank has a history of shutting down accounts for even one gift card purchase made using a mobile wallet.
Why use it at Target: The Altitude Reserve is an excellent option for a single card to use almost everywhere in-store. Mobile tap-to-pay is accepted almost universally these days, so if you have the card, you’re

Frequently asked questions
How do I get 5% cash back rewards with the Target Circle™ Mastercard?
The Target Circle™ Mastercard gives you a 5% discount, rather than 5% cash back rewards. You’ll see this discount reflected on your receipt at Target stores or when you check out at Target.com.
Can I use my Target Circle™ Mastercard outside of Target?
Yes, but you really shouldn’t. The Target Circle™ Mastercard offers lackluster rewards outside of Target and Target.com and rewards come as credit toward a Target gift card. You can easily better cash back elsewhere using another card. The debit card and reloadable card cannot be used outside of Target.
What happened to Target Circle 1% rewards?
Target Circle™ no longer offers 1% rewards on every purchase. Instead, Target offers targeted promotions which will vary by account. Not every Target Circle members will be eligible for every offer.
Should I get the Target Circle™ credit card, debit card, or reloadable account.
In our view, the Target Circle™ Mastercard is the clear choice. You’ll receive the same 5% discount with any of the Target Circle cards, but the credit card offers better protections against fraudulent purchases.
How do I find information on the Target Red Card?
The Target Red Cards have been rebranded as Target Circle™ cards. Our coverage at cardsandpoints.com has been updated to reflect the new Target Circle™ branding.
