Our review: Complicated rewards, lackluster benefits.
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi used to be the must-get card for Costco small business customers, but it’s a product that has been ignored for nearly a decade—and it shows.
Best-in-class rewards on gas, but not great for Costco. The 4% rewards on up to $7,000 of gas purchases are truly best-in class rewards, making the Costco Business Visa one of the best credit cards for gas purchases. But the card is hardly the best card to use for Costco purchases. The card only offers 2% rewards at Costco warehouses and at Costco.com, meaning that you can earn more rewards with other cards.
Lack of extended warranty and benefits in general is a downer. Costco used to heavily promote that you could get an extra year of extended warranty with its credit card, but it quietly stripped that benefit from its co-branded cards several years ago. Nonetheless, many cardmembers (and Costco employees) will state with conviction that an extended warranty is a benefit of the card. It’s not.
Complicated rewards. Redeeming the rewards of the Costco Business Visa is much more complicated than it needs to be. Instead of earning cash back rewards that you can redeem online, you receive your rewards as a paper certificate in your February statement. Worse, you must redeem your certificate in-person at a U.S. Costco warehouse. The card would be much better if it just dumped the rewards into your credit card account as a statement credit.
Bottom line: If you’re a Costco business member, you’re probably going to get this card by default. You’ll be well-rewarded for gas purchases, but other cards will offer much better rewards and benefits on your Costco purchases.
Rewards: Cash back with a catch
While the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi offers excellent rewards for gas purchases, it offers only lackluster 2% rewards on most purchases at Costco. Here’s what the Costco Visa earns:
- 4% on eligible gas and EV charging for the first $7,000 per year. 1% thereafter.
- 3% at restaurants.
- 3% on eligible travel, including Costco travel.
- 2% on all other purchases at Costco and Costco.com.
- 1% on all other purchases.
Unlike many other cash back rewards cards, the rewards you earn on your Costco credit card come in the form of a credit card reward certificate. Rewards are earned during the calendar year (January-December) and you receive accumulated rewards once your February statement closes. Your credit card reward certificate must be redeemed in a single transaction at a Costco warehouse as a merchandise credit or cash back.
Benefits: Purchase protection and not much else
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi offers a limited suite of benefits:
- Purchase protection.
- Worldwide car rental insurance.
- Travel accident insurance.
- Travel and emergency assistance services.
Importantly, the Costco Anywhere Business Visa does not include an extended warranty benefit. Citibank and Costco stripped this benefit from the card years ago, so if you want an extended warranty, you should choose another card to use at Costco.
Alternatives: Consider these other cards
