Credit cards that offer Walmart+ membership credits

What is the Walmart+ credit?

With the Walmart+ credit on select American Express cards, you can get a statement credit to cover your monthly Walmart+ membership fee.

The Walmart+ credit is marketed as a “$155+ Walmart+ credit” but the credit covers the $12.95 monthly Walmart+ membership fee plus applicable taxes. If you live in a state where you pay sales tax, you’ll get marginally more value from the Walmart+ credit.

Enrollment is required for the Walmart+ credit.

Which card with a Walmart+ credit is better for me?

None of the credit cards offering a Walmart+ credit is worth getting solely for the Walmart+ membership credit. All of the cards offering this perk have annual fees well in excess of the $155 or so you’ll save each year on your Walmart+ membership through statement credits. But if you can get more value than the card’s annual fee, then it could make sense to pick up one of these cards.

Fortunately, these cards offer additional perks and rewards. Here’s how to decide whether it’s worthwhile to pick up a card with a Walmart+ membership credit.

The American Express® Business Gold Card: Easy value if you also use the flexible credit

American Express® Business Gold Card

The American Express® Business Gold Card offers a credit for Walmart+ monthly membership, plus up to $240 in flexible business credits annually. If you can maximize the value of both of these credits, you may get more value than the card’s $375 annual fee.

The flexible business credit and Walmart+ monthly membership credits require enrollment.

The $240 in flexible business credits is awarded as up to $20 in statement credits each month. To get the full value of the credit, you’ll need to enroll and make qualifying U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, or office supply stores. If you order from Grubhub at least monthly, you’re likely to get close to the full value out of the credit. Purchases of gift cards at office supply stores won’t earn the credit per the terms and conditions of the card.

Beyond the credits, you can get 4 points per dollar in your top 2 categories where you spend the most each billing cycle. Eligible categories include:

  • Purchases at US media providers for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
  • U.S. purchases made from electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers
  • U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • Transit purchases including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
  • Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S.

Our take on the welcome offer: We don’t get terribly excited about the standard offer on the American Express® Business Gold Card offered through affiliate channels, but you might be targeted for a better offer once you get to the Amex website.

The link above is our affiliate link. We always show you the best offer, and this is the best offer we know about on this card.

Rewards: 4x on your top 2 eligible categories each billing cycle, on up to $150,000 of combined purchases each calendar year (1x thereafter). 3x on flights & prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com. 1x on other eligible purchases.
Benefits: Up to $240 flexible business credit. (Enrollment required.) Up to $155 Walmart+ credit. (Enrollment required.) Trip delay insurance.

Bottom line: If you can maximize both the Walmart+ credit and the flexible business credit, you’ll about break even on the annual fee. You’ll get more value than the card’s annual fee by using the card in categories where you can earn 4x points per dollar.

The Platinum Card® from American Express: Better for premium travel perks

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers a credit for Walmart+, but you’re going to have to find quite a bit of value elsewhere to justify the $695 annual fee of The Platinum Card®. Here are some ways that the card can pay off:

  • $240 digital entertainment credit. You’ll get up to $20 in monthly statement credits when you use your card for purchases of Disney+, a Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Peacock, or The Wall Street Journal. Enrollment required.
  • $200 Uber cash. Each month, you’ll be awarded $15 in Uber Cash credits which can be used for Uber rides or Uber Eats purchases, plus a bonus $20 in December.
  • $200 airline fee credit. Receive up to $200 in statement credits annually for incidental fees charged by the eligible airline you select. Selection of your preferred airline is required prior to purchase.
  • Airport lounge access. If you travel frequently, the Amex Platinum will give you access to one of the most comprehensive, including The Centurion Lounge, Escape Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Sky Club, Lufthansa Lounges and Plaza Premium lounges. Enrollment required for Priority Pass. Some lounges are only available if traveling on a same-day flight operated by select airlines.

The benefits above are only a small selection of the benefits offered on The Platinum Card® from American Express, but they are the ones that we believe are the most useful to most people.

Our take on the welcome bonus: The welcome bonus you see on this panel is the current public offer available through. However, American Express frequently changes the offer on this card and it is likely better offers are available through other channels. Check out our dedicated Amex Platinum welcome offer article for some tips on where you might find a better bonus.

Annual fee: $695
Rewards: 5x on up to $500k per calendar year on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex travel. 1x other purchases.
Benefits: Lounge access. Myriad statement credits. Premium consumer and travel insurance benefits.

Bottom line: Unless you’re traveling, you’re unlikely to get enough value from The Platinum Card® to justify its annual fee. But if you travel frequently, the lounge access program can provide huge value and the total value you get from the card’s statement credits and perks can make it well-worth paying $695 a year.

How to use the Walmart+ credit

Once you have a card that offers a Walmart+ credit, getting the credit is simple. All you need to do is change your payment method for you monthly Walmart+ membership to your eligible card. You don’t need to enroll in the benefit with Amex. Amex states that statement credits may take 6-8 weeks to post to your account. In practice, it’s been my experience that you get your Walmart+ credit within a few days of your monthly membership charge.

Keep in mind that only monthly memberships are eligible. You won’t receive statement credits for an annual Walmart+ membership charged to your card. You must subscribe to Walmart+ monthly to receive credits. Additionally, you will only receive credit for a Walmart+ membership. You won’t get a credit for membership “Plus Ups” or a Walmart Business+ membership.

Amex offers: An alternate path to a free Walmart+ membership

American Express also offers a program called Amex Offers. These targeted promotions are offered to individual cardmembers and often feature generous rebates on merchants you’d purchase from anyway.

In the past, Amex has targeted some cardmembers for an Amex offer that would cover a substantial portion of a Walmart+ annual membership. These offers have even popped up on Amex’s no-annual-fee cards. If you don’t have the American Express® Business Gold Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express, check your Amex offers to see if you’ve been targeted for a Walmart+ offer.
