If you hold The Platinum Card® from American Express, you might know about the card’s $15 monthly Uber credit. But even if you don’t ride with Uber often, you can get plenty of value from the credit by using it to order from Uber Eats.
Which cards offer an Uber Cash credit?
Both the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer cardmembers a monthly Uber Cash credit. The Platinum card offers $200 in Uber cash annually each year, awarded as $15 each month, plus a $20 bonus ($35 total) in December.
The credit becomes available on the first day of each month and expires on the last day of each month. There is no opportunity to roll over your credits month-to-month. If you don’t use it, you lose it.
How I use my Amex Uber Cash credit?
I used to use Uber all the time. Nowadays, I can probably count the number of times I use Uber during the year on two hands. I am a fan of both using public transportation where it is readily available and renting a car when it is not. On my upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. I’ll get around using the metro. When I go to a place that doesn’t have great transit options, I’ll rent a car. In downtown Chicago, I’ve found that metered cabs are both more convenient and lower-priced. And most of my trips are short enough that parking at my home airport makes sense.
So, around the end of the month, I find myself with $15 in Uber cash and no plan to spend it. My solution to this? I order take-out from Chipotle through the Uber Eats app. Since Uber Eats allows you to order from many restaurants for either take-out or delivery, a take-out order can be an easy way to use one of your credits that would otherwise go to waste.
Ordering through Uber Eats is simple, but it does require a bit of planning ahead. You can’t simply show up at a place, order at the counter and pay with the app. You must place your order through the app. When you place an order, you’ll get an estimated time that your order will be ready. At my local Chipotle, the promised delivery time for orders through Uber Eats is usually about 15 minutes.
Most months, even if I don’t set foot in an Uber, I get the value from my Uber Cash credit through Uber Eats.
Bottom line
The Uber Cash benefit is a benefit of both the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express that anyone can use. Even if you don’t use Uber to get around, remember that you can use this credit for a takeout or delivery order through Uber Eats.
